10 things i learned from Microsoft VC summit

I attended yesterday the annual Microsoft VC summit. Congrats to Barak Shein who put up a great event. I learned a lot more about what Microsoft is doing. Here are some of the points:

1. Microsoft is an incredibly successful company aware of its weaknesses and working on them
2. Microsoft never had a bad quarter in 30 years
3. They are working with startups at the earliest stage from the moment they think there is something good to do
4. There is a strong intention to shift the culture of the company and move away from the arrogance of a market leader
5. Microsoft is doing a lot on search and advertising but is not there yet at all. They say it is a long term game. I am not sure about that
6. Microsoft R&D center in Israel grew from 100 to 450 engineers in one year. WOW
7. No one has a clue about what the web is going to look like in 5 years. and even less what the next killer app is going to be
8. Mobile Web is the next big thing and Cellular Carriers are here to stay,
9. ...but what they don t understand is that they are not content and service providers but only content and services enablers. ISPs have understood that already Carriers will get there too with the mobile web (this one is a personal take)
10. If you had to ask me what is missing most to Microsoft: speed. Speed in their development and roll out cycle. Speed in their application (not talking only Windows/office but most of their web property). This is where Google is today better

What is Facebook waiting for...?

• Changing the meaningless word of "Friend"
• removing the "is" in the status
• creating a fitler of people who are your real friends and provide a feed for that
• enabling a true photo management system like on Flickr. Same thing on video
• Stopping referring me to facebook to read messages and actually sending me my messages
• Letting me remove this confirmation panel each time i add someone as a friend
• letting me add/remove multiple people as friend
• providing knowledge paths between friends (like on linkedin)
• providing true people search
• providing unique URLs for anything
• providing a correct group management and alert system (new members, messages,..)

StyleShake is open for business

I am happy to announce that one of LGiLab's portfolio company, StyleShake has officially open its doors.

StyleShake enables you to create and order design dresses and receive them at home a few days later (available in the UK for now). Call it User generated fashion if you want. Mike Butcher has covered the launch and i do not have more to add to it.

StyleShake's team has done a lot within a very short period of time and given the level of complexity behind what you see it could be considered as a good beginning.

Fashion is a big piece of cake. There is a very clear trend of products created or assembled by the users in all kinds of verticals (furniture, consumer electronics, design, ..). Not only in fashion. Cafepress and Zazzle have proven successful in the past with simple tshirts (and other products). StyleShake is stepping up the stairs and wanta to give you the possibility to do that with higher end type of cloths.

This will be an exciting period to follow up. Even if you do not plan to buy a dress you can start to play with the studio here. Yes i know, I am not very good at designing a dress and i am definitely not a target user for the service, but it took me a few clicks to do that one below.

Is there space for MySpace in Israel?

I  read in the marker that Myspace plans to arrive in Israel and even is searching a content manager. The israeli market is already so crowded with local Social Networks and social services (including ICQ) that i wonder how on earth they are going to manage here. If you look at the israeli internet landscape no big internet brand except msn (through a strategy of local content partnership) managed to succeed in Israel. Google is very strong in Israel, but you'll allow me not to compare MySpace with them.
