I had very high expectations for the last David Lynch movie Inland Empire. I saw it last night (was not distributed in Isreal had to wait for the DVD). And i think i need another month to really digest it.
This is the kind of movie you don't understand and that is not meant to be understood. I will probably need to watch it 3 or 4 times more before i start to really feel what the author tried to say there. This is exactly what happened to me when i saw for the first time Mulholland Drive (another David Lynch) which is one of my top10 best movies ever and that has many common points with the present movie.
The story cannot be told in a linear way(although some bit are built like a story) and if this was painting this would be more a Dali than a Monet. The movie is 3h long. If you plan to see it, come with a HUGE open mind and a lot of Patience. DO NOT try to find an explanation.
There are at least 3 good reasons to watch this movie: outstanding OST, Laura Dern is fantastic and the stunning photography (David Lynch started to play with his DV camera).
The rational basis to the movie is very light and has hollywood and the movie industry for a background. But i believe this is just a pretext for David Lynch which made here his most intimate, experimental and personal movie. Starting with the title (watch below how he chose it)
If you like Lynch, you will like this movie and the feelings it creates. Actually it is better to have seen other Lynch's movie to catch with Inland Empire. You find there all the visual signatures that Lynch has already created in the past (presence of evil, camera effects, opposition good/bad).
But it is VERY LIKELY you won't like the movie I need more time to understand why i liked it. Just like visiting a museum. When i do, i will write more about it.
One of the most ridiculous cooking program ever produced is landing in Israel.
Iron Chef america is a kind of "Street fighter" for cooking. The chefs are really great cooks and they make killing stuff with the "secret ingredient of the day". But the whole making and scenario is purely ridiculous. they want to make a kind of competition out of cooking. Which for me not only does not work but also is totally irrelevant since the only way to really evaluate a recipe is by tasting it. The competition takes place in a "kitchen stadium" (LOL), cameras are zooming just like in a John Woo movie, comments are close to the interestingness of a football game...
And this show is now available on national tv in israel (on channel 10 with the title "Krav Sakinim" "the knifes battle"). Except it is even more ridiculous since the producers do not have the same "know how" to restitute the tension/atmosphere (that has no meaning again in a kitchen) and the effects. A good zap
The moderating system of project Agape (who is powering the "causes" app in Facebook) is not
working. 1 month after i notified
them, racist and hate-raising causes are still present in Facebook
What the hell is going on there? Do we need to send a cease and desist? if a
lawyer is reading this i would be interested to know what can be done
exactly.
Thanks to Jerome who used "vous" instead of "tu" for this interview last week while i was in Paris, jetlagged, back from TechCrunch40 . I was at the IE Club conference i was animating with Julien Codorniu from Microsoft. The conference was great. The after conference even better. But i paid the price as i landed in Tel Aviv. i was totally out of battery
Next week (oct 2nd) Yaron Herman releases his new album A time for Everything. As i told you some of the titles are recreations of pop hits. here is a short extract of what he did with "Toxic" from Britney Spears. So Britney, Do you like it?
This is the first time you can hear this tune (with permission of the artist).
By the way the first reviews of Yaron's album in france are asbolutely amazing. a promising hit. Below an article in the french prestigious JazzMag (click to enlarge)
I guess you only know once you have made a nice exit. i doubt this game provides the answer. I honestly don't believe in crowdsourcing for investments. Youtube or Flickr or Zimbra would have never gotten that way. An investment decision is a complex process. Give it to the crowd and you get a big mess.
I really don't like Moon River. It is a nice melody we all know from the emblematic movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, but this has been over played, over head, over everything. Except when Yaron Herman plays it. Enjoy
ps: this week i will post an extract of his version of "Toxic". Britney spears is going to have some surprises
