I recorded 2 versions of one of the most famous jazz standard: MY FUNNY VALENTINE.
VERSION #1. Listen below or download it here (right click and "save target as")
VERSION #2. Listen below or download it here (right click and "save target as")
VERSION #1 is just about the melody, no improvisation just above ballad mode. VERSION #2 is slower including an improvised intro and a full improvisation following the tune. For some reason i still don t understand i have problem improvising with the bridge (the middle part of the tune).
There are so many good versions of that tune that i don t know which one to recommend (of course chet baker and also keith jarrettin standards live). But a surprising one would be the one featuring in the HOTELS COSTES MIX. Misty and flowy. I also have to mention the unexpected amazing performance of Michelle Pfeiffer (with Dave Grusin on the piano) in the movie the fabulous baker boys.
Thanks Hilary. i feel flatered because i don't think i am such a great pianist but happy that you feel like that.
Actually i learnt jazz in a non conventional way without teacher and by listening a lot a music and playing many many tunes from the real book, trying each time to add a new twist. It is not a gift just a long hard work process that is far from being finished.
Both versions are very beautiful, but as a singer I really enjoy the first, because it's more predictable.
You have a wonderful gift.
Piano is a passion for me, but one thing that I'm not able to play is jazz. How did you become the great pianist that you are today?
