Twitterfone now works from Israel with a local phone number

TwitterFone.com has been created by two friends of mine (Florian Sersoussi and David Marcus) in partnership with Twitter. It enables you to call with no extra charge a local phone number which is transcribed and posted to Twitter instantly (above an example of message). They just opened the service in Israel. I tested it and it works great. Twitter is becoming an interesting ecosystem generator for other companies.

ps: if you wish to have an invitation for TwitterFone just post a comment i have a few with me

Bahu.com has a great new design

Bahu_new_design_is_great11

Bahu.com just released a new version of its  social network. Although i am biased as investor, and board member i have to admit they have done a great job. The quality of execution of this small team is very impressive for a company of this size. We recently met with a big company (a very big one) that could not believe Bahu was doing so much with such a little team (7 guys). I am not afraid to say that the user experience is much better than MySpace and in some way than Facebook (specially for this age group) although the user base is still small compared to those giants.

I am a big fan of the quality of execution. And i think the Bahu guys are on to something good. Keep on running!

Solution for missing babylon on MAC: Babylon

I was complaining about the absence of mac version of babylon for mac. Actually i stumbled upon a cool solution which partly solves the issue: qtl

200803301147.jpg

Qtl is a a FireFox plugin which restitutes Babylon translation service and experience while you browse the web. unfortunately it works only from the browser. I am sure there is a way to use it outside the browser when your laptop is connected to the internet.

If someone has an idea post it here.

Download the plug in here

My email is changing DNA

image I have been experiencing an interesting switch lately in my email experience, a switch that more and more users i am sure are noticing and a switch that will accelerate including in the traditional features we already know.

What is happening is that my email is becoming naturally more than a message tool : a social dashboard. We all use emails to send and receive messages but with all those new social platforms we start to subscribe (sometimes without knowing) to all kinds of alerts related to the activity of our friends on those platforms: we receive request for new friends, alert when you are tagged in a photo, when a comment is posted in a blog, when someone wants to add you in Linkedin, when someone send you a message on Facebook and so on...There are even services like Twittermail that enable you to control twitter from your email

I would not count the number of messages i could put in that category and of course there is absolutely no way i could keep track of that activity by going each time to all those services and trying to spot the changes. So on one side this is invading but on the other this is time saving and improving usage efficiency. [Btw if you are overwhelmed with alerts all good services allow you to control the pace and in addition you can set rules to classify them efficiently in your email (Gmail is perfect for that)]

The WebMail as a central social platform

My point is the following: since my email is becoming the central place (and i think the best place) where i am receiving all those messages it is becoming and should become the best place for monitoring my social activity. Specially if you consider that email is being accessed more and more from mobile. The only problem is that emails systems are not built for embracing the social revolution

We already have there our contact list (which is supposed to be the most important one with our mobile phone) but it is not really leveraged, the alert rules need to be set in each service and manually configured in the email system in order to structure by service or folders. Extending that thought further i think the email which is becoming a central social nervous system, should have embedded news feed for friends (like FriendsFeed) which you can as an option receive by email). A news feed is nothing else than a message you are receiving in your inbox, just like an email. Email should be a lot more convenient to manage our invitations (both to send and accept/reject them). All social networks already offer an contact book import but why not go all the way and ask email providers to offer that to users to simplify their like where they need it most.

What i am saying in a word is that email should be re invented in the light of the new social landscape that stands before us. Is there an opportunity to beat Gmail in it own land? Can a startup do that? Will Gmail do it before others (a few hints are coming up, more about that here)?

image A few new services are trying to bridge that need: i referred above to TwitterMail, Outwit is helping a lot for those who wish to twit from Outlook but in my mind the reference for now remains Xobni that brings social DNA within your email (in addition to be an amazing mail search far better than google desktop or even X1). It maps best contacts within your inbox and provides useful tools to better connect with them. This is only step1. But a good beginning (looking forward to their web based version for gmail)

An inevitable evolution to social mail

This will inevitably happen because this would improve dramatically the way we manage our digital life but also because Social platforms with their internal messaging system are used more and more instead of email being a threat to email providers. Email providers can't let that happen can't let that happen of course...

Email providers will have to become social or will die as a main communication tool becoming just one among other services.

Conferencing

I will be away for a while in the US attending some of the most interesting web conferences of the moment. I will start with Microsoft's Mix in Vegas, then follow up with the excellent-issimo SXSW in Austin, Texas and will end up with Digital Media in NY. I hesitated this year to attend Web2.0 Expo/Summit but i thought it would be good to change a bit and meet some different people in different places.

conferences

I will stop first by San Francisco for business and will of course take the opportunity of this trip to meet anyone who would be interested if time allows.

Slow blogging during this period, but heavy twittering (if twitter works)

Startups: searching for more visibility? Think Plugg

image It is now too late to apply to Lift Venture Night dedicated to showcase a selection of the finest European startups (no Israeli startups there, what a shame). But don't worry other events are coming up in Europe that can bring you quality visibility and networking if Europe is your plans.

Next up is Plugg that will be hold in Brussels March 19. They organize a Startup Rally whose jury i will be part of. If you are interested you can register here

Thanks to Robin Wauters for his invitation to participate

The Power of viral videos for Startups

image If you read TechCrunch you may have noted the viral video of Modu (Disclosure: a portfolio company of my employer). Although i usually feed TechCrunch editors with some leads for stories on Israeli Startups this time this was not the case and i asked Erick Schoenfeld how he got the story

He simply received this video that teased him enough to write the post that provoked a lot of reactions and that was seen already more than 5300 times in less than 12 hours. The video does not really explain what the product is nor what the company does. But it is good enough (including their fantastic temporary site) to create curiosity and engage with readers

When used right, viral videos are really powerful. More than sending a PR or pitching bloggers/journalists. A similar thing happened with 5min.com a few months ago with their VC videos (that i am still being forwarded months after).

What makes a video viral? here is the question. there is no easy answer. but this is a video that has an inner trigger for action once your done with it. If someone has the answer please post it here.

There are two more usage made of videos (not always viral) by internet startups

Video Guide: explaining your users how to use your site in a video is something more powerful than any FAQ. Actually if you pay attention most new websites come with a ScreenCast or demo video. Making a good one is not easy but many tools out there enable you to do it for free.

Elevator Pitch: Vator.tv is a good example of that and TechCrunch runs a story about it today

5 things you think should happen in 2008. And that won't

I am not good at predictions. But there are a few things i believe most people are expecting to happen in 2008 and that purely won't

Web3.0 won't find its marks. Web2.0 is the standard. Unfortunately

By the time we talk about Web2.0 we should start hearing more about web3.0. People will talk in 2008 about Web.30. Except most people won't have a clue about what web3.0 is. For the same reason most people (including me) did not manage to figure out what web2.0 is except an easy gimmick. Therefore the common expression will remain web2.0. Ridiculous but like that

The internet Bubble is still not there. But why??

Journalists can help seeing in every startup/A round the promise of a coming  bubble. For months. But it does not happen and it is not likely to happen this year. Specially with an advertising marketing and e-commerce economy that is promised to substantially grow in 08. Many startup will die. But that's a different story and certainly not a bubble

Facebook/Twitter fatigue? Not yet

Enough of Facebook and Twitter. Those are trends and fashion... Yeah right...Facebook is and will stay big. BIG TIME. Twitter will grow nicely and will still be there because they have one of the most passionate communities on the web. If you don't believe me ask people who use it if they could do without it.

Free/Low Cost Wifi. not for us

In IT prices always go down. DSL, computers, cameras, min of VOIP, phones. But not publici Wifi. You believe that our beloved operator will listen to you and drop the costs of wifi in public places. No way. They believe we are all millionaires and will keep charging us 30 USD a day for wifi. Meraki and Fon will remain isolated initiatives and won't cover mainstream usage.

Books and CDs won't end in Museums.

Blogs/Online books and Mp3s won't replace books and CDs. Not yet. Kindle is cool but remains an early adopter eBook. and CD sales are slowing but still people enjoy going to a Music Shop and DRMs will still be around for a little more

Any other false signals for 2008?
