I usually blog about Israel in another blog as i already have enough to say here, but lately one event has captured everyone’s attention: Ariel Sharon’s Health. You all probably know that right now Israeli prime minister is struggling for his life after having gone through 2 brain strokes. He’s right now being treated at Hadassa Hospital in Jerusalem (in this link all the medical reports also here)

I wanted to share with you what the Israeli society is going through for the past 72 hours and also anticipate on what will probably happen.
First: this is THE NEWS. One year nearly after Yasser Arafat death, Sharon goes to hospital. All the media in Israel changed all their programs to report permanently on his health. As much as it is possible, cause nothing is really communicated. Of course. But not only in Israel, in most countries in the world this has become a top news, even in Arab countries, where Sharon is considered as a devil. Interesting thing also: “Ariel Sharon” is in the TOP10 of Technorati search.
What is amazing is the ART the media use to fill airtime with NO-INFORMATION: comments, assumptions, possible political scenarios, economical scenarios, review of his life (as if he were dead). It is as if we were being prepared to his death before the time…
Second: the massive support is AMAZING. Who would have imagined 2 years ago that a demonized character like Sharon would receive so many positive support at this moment. From everywhere. Yes even in Arab countries. Why? Because probably the world starts to understand that in the peace process he’s THE MAN. The only one able to bring up true changes and make difficult decisions and compromises that will bring peace, as he recently proved with the Gaza strip evacuation of all settlers. But make no mistake, arabs leaders did not suddenly start to like Sharon. They know that in our current situtation he’s the man that was going to bring peace, in some way.
Some quotes here:
- “On a purely humanitarian level we feel sorry for Mr. Sharon” said Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister Nabil Shaath
- “Politically, it will increase the uncertainty we are facing to get back to the peace process. It is highly unpredictable to tell what will happen.”
- "A live Sharon is better for the Palestinians now, despite all the crimes he has committed against us"
More of those sentences here
Third: what made me through up really is the reaction of extremists of anyside wishing and praying for his death. Of course Hamas and Jihad Islamic terror groups are in a close-to-orgasma mood, celebrating in the street and distributing candies to everyone.
Iranian president Ahmadinejad did not loose of course this opportunity. It is of course the opportunity to remind for the million times he was the criminal of Sabra and Chatila but of course by hiding the true chain of responsibilities. Guys! where is the respect for LIFE? RESPECT FOR LIFE the basic principle of religion! When Arafat died i challenge anyone to find Israelis and praying for and celebrating his death.
“We are not sorry about his health and let him go to hell whether he lives or dies... We, in Islamic Jihad, shall continue our holy war until we regain our rights.” said Anwar Abu Tah, a leader of the Islamic Jihad in Lebanon
More of those “sentences” heres
What really also made me shout is the reaction of some extremists jew being Happy of Sharon’s health condition. Indeed he brought settlers out of Gaza and was planning to do more, so they hate him. But those are minor and not even worth paying attention.
Four: the critical interrogations. It is VERY likely Sharon will not come back to politics. So…
- who will replace him? Shimon Perez? Ehud Olmert?
- Who will lead the new party he created a few months ago (Kadima) to counterstrike raise of labour party?
- Who will win the national elections in 3 months? Fragilized likud? Stronger labour party? or Forth going kadima?
- Will the winner be able to move on with the peace process only condition to bring Israel out of its economical crisis?
All those true incertainties are creating a very unstable climate and i think i can say for the first time in several years the Israelis feel really worried. This had immediate effect on the stock market that lost 4% right away…I guess most of Israeli citizen feel concerned by his health whether religious or not. And at this time jews in the world pray for his life. It is really moving to see this unity. Something i did not feel when i was in France when Mitterand died for example.

Fifth: the HOPE. Sharon said recently in an interview answering to the question :“if you were an animal?”, A lion. He truely his. if you don’t know really the character, even if you think you don t like him get interested in his life. He is an outstanding character. He recently managed what no one did before. Create change. Arafat did not create change, Sharon’s predecessors (out of Rabin) did not. He did. I believe he managed to create a “spirit of change” that will go beyond him and that is expected by the Israeli society. A recent poll proves that even without him his party will win the elections. I think this is what will happen.
Ariel Sharon has created a wind of hope. And this wind will never die.

Exxxxcellent article Ouriel.
In France it was also amazing to see how jews from any political side, religious side or whatever, tremendously paralyzed or shocked by Sharon's brain attack.
In France, I saw a lot of people crying when he was burried (or exposed, I don't really know) in Notre Dame de Paris. At this time, I didn't understood why.
Sharon is not dead and "will ever live as you say", but even now, I felt like crying... Strange no ?

indeed, the end of something is around, but israeli know how to take challenges. Starting with Sharon: it is being said today that sharon will come back tomorrow from his coma, which would be a miracle...

Sharon still has one last chance to repent for the whole Sabra and Shatila massacre, if he's still got the mental capacity for it anyway.
