AFTER THE MILLIONDOLLARHOMEPAGE, 1000TAGS.COM

If you didn’t know the milliondollarhomepage, rush to discover the most stupid and greatest idea of all times in the web. Buy 1 pixel+link to your site for 1 USD. 1 million to sell = 1 million dollars. The guy (student) behind this idea has become rich in less than 6 months…Everybody talked about it.

If you know it here’s a new stupid and great concept reported by Techcrunch: 1000TAGS

1000tags basically is selling 1000 clickable keywords (called tags) that will redirect to your website if you buy the word. You suggest your tag and you can buy it exclusively or shared (then it links to a page with all links) and the Tag will appear small or big according to the price you are ready to pay.

In my view less powerful than milliondollarhomepage for a few reasons:

• tags and clouds are not a familiar concept to all
• pricing is higher (5$/character) and more complex (exclusive/not, size)
• the concept/brand (1000tags) is not related to the bizness model (keyword price)
• the impressiveness is missing: 1 million sounds more “WOW” than 1 thousand and will affect buzz
• counter is missing (how many sold/ remaining)
• words are less powerful than images
• no face and no story behind it (yet) out of challenge. milliondollar was to help finance a student university, people liked it. One hint they are europeans not americans..

What i liked though

• the simplicity of the concept (word >link)
• the easy challenge
• pure design. no fuss
• the “free tag” you can get if you buzz about them (i am going to try it:)
• the ajax interface to include and pay for a tag
• the limit to 1000 tags. Measurable and reachable
• they are first to do it. So they have a chance to catch up and create buzz
• the interest for advertiser: if many visits you will get easy traffic for a low budget
• A powerful advertising concept that could be replicated to complete google adsense.
