IM HAZARDOUS INVESTMENT

Meebo, a web based Instant Messenger, has just raised 3–4m USD with the prestigious VC Sequoia Capital.
Meebo offers in one service access to MSN, YAHOO MESSENGER, AIM, ICQ, GTALK AND JABBER. OK meebo might be a cool service but what i really wonder is how Sequoia could invest so much money on such a service knowing that:
- there are already a lot of competition in the area (gaim, trillian, e-messenger.net ..)
- there is no real business model associated…yet
- no desktop client (which makes the service even more accessible cause no browser needed)
- that those company use the protocol of others IMs without authorization (for the anecdot MSN and YAHOO block those type of services regularly generating a lot of user frustration)
To me it looks like a hazardous investment unless they are planning a big stuff…
